Get your stripes working for the #1 global guide to Ibiza.

If the idea of working as a writer on Ibiza has ever grabbed you, this could be your lucky day. We are looking for versatile writer interns to cover a wide range of topics from clubbing and dance music to taking jeep safaris or boat cruises on the Med.

Loads of budding writers have passed through our hallowed doors and gone on to become full time professional writers and journalists. That could be you!

Writer internship

Summer 2018

20-30 hours per week

For this year's programme we're looking for a number of interns to work with us. You will be covering the main summer season (May to October) for which we will train you up remotely during March and April so you can hit the ground running when you arrive in May.

It's vital that you have a passion for dance music and music journalism AND be able to turn your hand to all kinds of events and activities outside of that. Two-thirds of your editorial focus will be clubbing, with the rest focussing on all aspects of tourist life on Ibiza.

We'll work with you to make sure you build some great skills; if you do REALLY well, there's scope to get promoted to a full-time Ibiza Spotlight staff writer during the 2018 summer season.

What's required of you

  • You must be able to write well and previous writing experience is preferred, eg local newspaper, student magazine or blog - please provide recent examples
  • Excellent knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation is a basic requirement
  • Good computer skills – this goes without saying
  • Social media savviness is something we expect of any candidate – we'll ask you about this in the interview
  • You need to be a problem solver be responsible and take the job seriously. Oh, and we need you to be creative, witty and fun - can you do all that?
  • This is not a nine to five job. We will need you to take on anything we throw at you and it's vital you meet agreed deadlines – this is a deadline-driven job!
  • You must possess a thick skin. You will be in contact with all kinds of people, some of whom won't always be in the best of moods. Not taking someone's grumpiness personally is a job pre-requisite.
  • Ibiza Spotlight is a trusted brand and you will be representing us, so diplomacy needs to be your watchword
  • In terms of music genres, please leave your prejudices at home. This is really important. We all have our tastes, but a trance fan who doesn't get Cocoon is as equally unwanted as a techno snob who doesn't get why 5000 people go to Cream every week. In other words, be up for anything!

Beyond that there are no rules and no ideal candidate; it's up to you to catch our attention. You may be a Pulitzer Prize winner in the making, but if you don't show us that, we can't pick you.

What's in it for you?

  • One-on-one mentoring and teaching – everything we know, we want to pass on to you. We will work with you individually to greatly improve your skills as a writer.
  • Free guestlist/passes for venues – within reason, we'll sort you out!
  • Exposure – have your work published on Ibiza's biggest website; several million people will see the fruits of your labour over the summer
  • Networking opportunities – this is the first step to working on Ibiza, journalism and the music business: working with us will provide the connections you need to network on an international level
  • Money – while most internships just offer expenses for travel and lunch, we appreciate we're not just a bus ride away. We offer increased expenses to assist towards rent/living costs once interns arrive on Ibiza. Full details will be discussed with potential candidates.
  • Office space – use our office and internet whenever you want
  • The summer of your life – a whole summer of the best music, people, parties and beaches

Day to day tasks

  • Researching and writing editorial copy for news, features, opinion articles, event and music reviews
  • Regularly attending events and parties; taking part in activities across the island - for the purpose of writing reviews, features or interviews
  • Liaising with all industry figures, from promoters, PRs, artists DJs and our clients
  • Writing about anything Ibiza related (you will need to build your Ibiza knowledge and use this to guide others)
  • Various administrative tasks to support editorial such as image or video sourcing, fact checking, transcribing and social media support

How to apply

We are looking for creative applications where your personality shines through. Clue: we don't need a list of your weekend work experience from age 12.

You can present your application in any format you like, though do ensure it fits onto one page of A4 - anything more than one page will NOT be considered.

Your application should include:

  • A mini profile of yourself
  • Any relevant writing experience with links and/or PDFs
  • Details on previous Ibiza holiday or work experience
  • Qualifications you think are worth mentioning
  • A recent photo of yourself
  • Finally, we want YOU to tell us why you are the ideal intern candidate (No more than 200 words)

All the above should be sent to content@ibiza-spotlight.com with the subject title 'INTERNSHIP IBIZA SPOTLIGHT 2018 *FULL NAME*'

Read Peter's account of his 2017 or Ruby's account of her 2016 Ibiza Spotlight internship to give you an idea of what you can expect. Now, picture yourself in that role!

About Ibiza Spotlight

Ibiza Spotlight is the global number one guide for all things Ibiza and was first launched just over 40 years ago. An internet pioneer, we first went online back in 1999, having been one of the island's first ever printed guides.

Today, we have a team of over 20 people working with us, whose sole aim is to make sure that the millions of visitors that come each year have a first class resource of island information for just about anything.

Ibiza Spotlight could be your all first step in becoming an important part of the dance music industry and the Ibiza community as a whole. If you're looking for that step, read on.
