Hedkandi celebrates 20th birthday at WNDRLND

A special occasion at Eden.

Hedkandi Ibiza celebrated its 20th anniversary in style last night at WNDRLND. The party kicked off at Eden with a host of hot island talent. Namely, Ibiza faves Lovely Laura & Ben Santiago brought their unique saxophone collaboration from the poolside and into the San An super club.

If the queue was anything to go by, inside should have been filling up thick and fast. Sure enough, it was. People had turned out in their masses to celebrate Hedkandi's birthday. It was a party to remember.

The venue was decorated in typical WNDRLND attire. Props hung from the ceiling and every corner was looking pretty. A huge pair of wings also surrounded the DJ booth - a nice nod towards Hedkandi.

Being a firmly established brand for 20 years, it has fans of all ages, making the clubbing brand current. Even though the old dance anthems were well before the majority of the crowd's time, it did not affect their ability to sing along to every word - clear proof that the best songs stand the test of time.

Chris Wright and Grant Nelson provided the warm-up soundtracks before Laura and Ben took to the stage. Amongst the oldies were the instantly recognisable The Power by James Hype, which got the crowd grooving and flinging their hands up once the chorus hit.

But we were not without newer tracks to sing along to. The R3HAB remix of One Kiss by Calvin Harris & Dua Lipa was a notable throwback to last summer.

Dressed in her signature floaty skirt and trainers, Lovely Laura stayed true to form as she jumped on stage. As lively as ever, the crowd fed off her energy. Headlining Hedkandi's birthday was somewhat if a return to her roots, as the brand brought her to the island back in the early 2000s.

For the occasion, Laura delivered a powerful and uplifting performance. She made it look too easy and her ability to make any song her own is an art. Just one example of this was her cover of CeCe Peniston's Finally.

The familiar sax sounds now filled the room but it was her version of Destination Calabria by Alex Gaudino that was a standout staple of the set.

With the help of DJ Ben Santiago providing the backing tracks, the hugely talented saxophonist had genuine stage presence. Meeting her after her set, we found it easy to see where she gets the name.

Following an outstanding set from the duo, it was time for the Freemasons to play us out until close. As expected, we were hit with all those Freemasons tunes we forgot we knew all the words to. In particular, Uninvited ft. Bailey Tzuke was a great hit.

Meanwhile, their remix of I Just Can't Get Enough still had the 05:30 crowd singing and dancing.

Only come 06:00 did the crowd begin to tire - including me. Albeit reluctantly, it was time to retire but not without a night full of good times. The party was a birthday to remember for Hedkandi. Here's to 20 more years of feelgood music and memories.

Business resumes for WNDRLND from next week. Catch it every Saturday at Eden until 21 September.
