Top 10 Releases: June 2013

Ten superb new releases in the world of dance.

Superflu and Andhim 'Hasoweh' / Monaberry / Released June 27th

Andhim have come out with some crackers of recent years and this piano-filled collaboration with Superflu is yet another. The video is the icing on the cake: pale, wet, European icing, featuring the four men engaged in high quality (erm) synchronised swimming. Their emotional embrace at the end is particularly moving.

Geddes 'Two Time' (Murk Remix) / Leftroom Limited / Released June 17th

UK DJ, producer and Mulletover masterminder, Geddes', new EP is enjoyable enough but it's the remix from US house legends, Murk, which lifts the small collection. Punchy, energetic and raw, this track would sit very well at the dawn end of an Ibiza techno set.

Maribou State 'Tongue EP' / Southern Fried Records / Released June 10th

This little EP has inspired further creativity from many. Not only are 'Tongue' and 'Larks Rise' quality songs in their own right, but both James Welsh and Drew Hill have come out with great remixes, and vocalist Holly Walker has recorded her own acoustic version of Tongue, in which her Regina Spektor-esque vocals feature.

Disclosure 'When a Fire Starts to Burn' / Cherry/Interscope / Released June 3rd

So simple, so good; I can't stop dancing to this one from golden boys, Disclosure, the highlight of their debut album 'Settle'. Everybody likes a good old preachin' sample, especially when it's accompanied by a clip like this.

Disclosure 'You and Me' (Flume Remix) / Currently Self Released

I hate to put two artists in one list, especially since the Disclosure bandwagon is getting awfully crowded of late, however this one is all about the Flume remix. A slightly exaggerated string-filled build up drops into a nicely chunky laid back beat with that fullness of sound and casual swing that features in all of Flume's best.

Black 80s 'Give Me Something' (Overnite Remix) / Air London / Released June 7th

The Black 80s is a duo combining experience and fresh talent respectively, compromising Hollis P Monroe and Overnite. With a reasonable conventional smooth house structure, this track perfectly combines subtle, slow synths and low husky vocals, which create a sense of melancholy amongst the beauty.

Rouge Mécanique 'Stingray' / Pyramid of Mars / Released June 24th

Stingray one half of the Witches EP, the first Rouge Mécanique release on Pyramid of Mars, which precedes forthcoming album. This is a seriously cool song with a laid back rock feel, a mysterious slide guitar is balanced with simple but prominent use of snares and hi-hats.

DJ Koze 'Burn With Me' / Pampa Records / Released June 14th

Previously a vinyl only release, Koze's 'Burn With Me' is now available on Beatport as of this month. Always creative, always eccentric, Koze has produced something as dark in sentiment and brooding as the title suggests, featuring that low, ever-present growl that is trademark to his sound.

Hobo 'Incise' / M-nus / Released May 27th

Officially released at the end of last month, I'm breaking the rules and sneaking this one in, as June as been the month for 'Incise'. It doesn't quite sound like the usual M-nus release, in fact it sounds a bit like another release altogether (is anyone else hearing Daphni, Ye Ye?), but this track is easily the standout from the miniMAX compilation released by Hawtin's label.

Boss Axis 'Challenger' (Alle Farben Remix) / Parquet Recordings / Released June 28th

Anything Alle Farben does sounds nice. How is he so consistent? Remixes, originals, a steady stream of sets which he posts for free download on his soundcloud... and they're all gorgeous. This particular Boss Axis remix is lifted to dizzy heights by a divine brass section, with Nils Heinrich on the trombone and Anselm Bautsch on the trumpet.
