Ibiza: Operation Scrap Iron

Last year dozens of boats were washed ashore in San Antonio when gales lashed the coast

Last year dozens of boats were washed ashore in San Antonio when gales lashed the coast and believe it or not, two of them are still there! The owners of the good ship Drass, a 50 ton fishing vessel, have gone missing but its companion on the beach, the Key West, has a more complicated story. It's been 'precincted' by a judge in Barcelona and another in Naples for its links to illegal drugs running.

Now, at last the coastal authorities have agreed to foot the bill for the removal of the two boats from the beach at a cost of €70,000 and with the help of 3 special cranes and a trailer from the mainland. Scheduled in for May, the work will take about 10 days and will result in the Drass being towed round to Ibiza town to be broken up for scrap.

The Key West operation has to be supervised by the customs authorities and the boat will be taken to a secure dry dock in San Antonio. Because the Paseo Maritimo (promenade) around the bay where the boat is beached can't take such heavy weights, the boat will be towed to Cala des Moro and then lifted out of the water and driven down to the port.

Sounds like lucky visitors in May will have plenty of entertainment.
