April in Ibiza

Now that direct flights to Ibiza have commenced from outside Spain the island tourist industry is starting to wake up

Now that direct flights to Ibiza have commenced from outside Spain the island tourist industry is starting to wake up – slowly – after its winter break. Around 13% of the hotels will be open at Easter and guests in them will find lots to occupy their time this month.

Obviously the main event is Easter, which is still an extremely important religious period here and is celebrated with large processions where sacred statues are borne around the streets of Ibiza on Good Friday evening and Santa Eulalia on Thursday and Friday evenings.

April weather is normally perfect for sporting activities, neither too hot nor too cold, and there are three big organised events to watch or participate in over the next few weeks. The Ruta de la Sal yacht regatta arrives in San Antonio on Good Friday, the big Mountain bike tour is based there over the Easter period and at the end of the month the Ultra team triathlon takes place from the 28th.

There will of course be opportunities for eating, drinking, live music and fiestas as San Antonio has organised a special food and tapas evening in the town on Good Friday to help celebrate the Ruta de la Sal – it has its own 'village' at the port – when lots of bars and restaurants will have super cheap food and drink on sale. The evening culminates with a pirate themed fiesta at 21.00!

San Jorge celebrates its saints day on 23rd April with live music and concerts – details to follow – and there is normally a book fair in Ibiza's Vara de Rey as books and red roses are the symbols of St George's day.

Also in the Vara de Rey there's an arts and crafts fare from 4th to 15th April which is ideal for buying some unique souvenirs of a spring trip to Ibiza. This month normally sees a big gastro celebration in Ibiza town when restaurants have special food at special prices and for a couple of days a big tapas festival takes place in a marquee in town. So far no details have been released but as soon as they are we'll publish them.
