Review: Together, 17th July

Ibiza's leading bass driven night shakes Amnesia to the floor once again.

A few years back, if I were to tell you that a party where dubstep, drum & bass and everything in between would hold a weekly residency at Amnesia I would have been laughed all the way to the airport and on the first flight home – but how things have changed!

If you have read my previous party reports, you'll know that I used to be quite an avid fan of D'n'B and dubstep, so when Together launched last year (named 'Tonight' last season) I was ever so excited for the party. My musical taste might have changed considerably since last season, but it's always nice to have a change of scenery once in a while, so I was looking forward to revisiting my youth, if you wish.

Pendulum were a group that first got me into drum & bass back in the day. Their album 'Hold Your Colour' was pretty much the soundtrack of my teenage years, so, seeing them at such a venue as Amnesia would hopefully bring back some memories. The Terrace was warming up nicely so I thought I'd pop into the Main Room to check them out. To say the atmosphere was live would be a huge understatement – it was electric! The ice cannons were going off more times than I could count on all my fingers and toes and mosh pits were breaking out left right and centre – even though I personally do not agree with them, the people that were involved seemed to having a great time. Playing tracks such as “Blood Sugar” and Chase & Status' huge track “Saxon”, they created so much energy in the room. In all fairness to Pendulum, their last track was probably the best last track I've seen on the island. Everyone singing along to the lyrics and the MC (who looked like he was having the time of his life) got everyone to do a sit down before the track dropped once again and a blast from the ice cannon set the crowd off!

Fancying a change of sound I moved on the Terrace where Annie Mac was opening up her set. I've seen Annie on various occasions in the past in various venues and each time she has played a different set, so I was pretty intrigued to what stuff she would play. On stage with her somewhat typical floppy hair and loose t-shirt, she started her set with the tech house smasher “Party Non Stop” which, again, set the ice cannons off. Throughout her set she played a varied blend of her usual House-come-Electro-come-Bass music which eventually led into some dubstep – but somewhat softer compared to the grimier tracks Nero was playing in the Main Room. Tracks that stood out in terms of crowd reaction on the Terrace were most definitely Eats Everything's remix of Adam F's classic D'n'B track “Circles” and the crossover chart track “212”.

It was hard to ignore Nero playing over in the Main Room at the same time so I popped back over to check out his set. The word 'dirty' comes to mind. As always, Nero produced a set that raised the roof with his mix of dubstep, drum & bass, electro and moombathon. His tracks, such as “Crush On You” and “Innocence” obviously sent the crowd into a sweaty twist, as well as a remix of Underworld “Born Slippy” and Drake's “Over” - which brought a smile to my face as I'm a big fan of Drake!

With impressive visuals and lighting and great line ups to come over the season, Together is one of those parties that does exactly what it says on the tin – good music, up for it crowd and plenty of BASS!
