Pope Beatifies Ibiza Priest

One of Ibiza's most important religious figures is to be beatified

One of Ibiza's most important religious figures is to be beatified by Pope Benedict XVI. Salvi Huix i Miralpeix was the Bishop of Ibiza between 1928 and 1935 and made many lasting achievements during this time. He was responsible for the construction of many of the religious buildings we see today including the Santa Cruz Church and the 'Nuns' School' Nuestra Señora de la Consolación.
However, important as his work was here, his beatification – a step towards sainthood – is mainly due to his martyrdom because of his faith. Huix had moved to Lleida just before the start of the Spanish Civil War and like thousands of other members of the Roman Catholic Church, he was shot in the early days of the war by the Republicans.
Pope Benedict's policy of recognising their martyrdom in the name of the church follows John Paul II's acts in recognising hundreds of Spanish priests as 'blessed.'
