Ibiza Herbs

Perhaps one of the most wonderful sensations in Ibiza is the smell of pine, rosemary and thyme wafting on the warm spring breeze. However, much more useful than their scent is the curative powers that many of the herbs growing wild in Ibiza possess.

Marc Moll, a herb specialist and presenter of the IB3 programme 'Magic Herbs' was in Santa Eulalia this weekend explaining the medicinal qualities of the herbs which can be found everywhere on the island.

poster for frigola liqueurLet's take a look at just one – frigola, or thyme – which has many uses. Mainly used by Ibicencos as a digestive liqueur, it's taken after dinner (with or without ice) to help digest the food. In addition it's a good antibiotic, used to combat fever and infections, and when made into a syrup it is used as cough medicine.

It is produced commercially but is less well known than the famous Hierbas though like hierbas, Moll warns that if taken in great quantity, can leave you with a hangover!

Let's be careful out there!
