Ibiza Virgins: Staying Safe in Ibiza

Spotlight wags the finger of warning at you all.

We'll apologise in advance for the condescending tone of the following, but there isn't really any other way to get the message across. Of course, we'd like to point out at this stage, Spotlight doesn't condone drug use or any other illegal activity, we're just trying to get people to think wisely about the decisions they make. Ibiza changes lives.....just make sure you and your friends are able to look back on it and smile.

Drugs

It's quite simple, use and possession of drugs in Ibiza are subject to the same laws as you'll broadly find anywhere in the world. They are illegal and if you get caught, it's luck of the draw as to what might happen to you. Depending on the amount you have with you and what type of drug it is, you could face anything from a night in the cells to criminal action and a hefty fine. If you're caught in a club, the best case scenario is that you escape with your drugs being confiscated and your quick departure through a fire exit (head first!).

Alcohol

In Ibiza, there isn't really such a thing as singles and doubles when it comes to spirits, every measure is probably a treble or more, so bear that in mind when you're knocking them back. Moreover, have at least some basic idea of your limitations, as if you're really drunk, you ain't getting in the club. Ask yourself, do you really wanna be the person who falls asleep mortal drunk in the middle of the West End? The dreaded vinegar and tomato ketchup shower awaits you!

Driving

We can't stress the issues of drinking and driving enough. In Spain, the legal blood alcohol limit for driving is extremely low, as little as one beer or glass of wine for some people. In other words, if you've been drinking at all, however little, you're likely to be over the limit. The Guardia Civil are out in force in Ibiza throughout summer at all the hotspots; entering/exiting Playa D'en Bossa for busy Space parties, the roundabout leading to Pacha, the Salinas road to and from DC10, the exit road from Amnesia and even other popular occasions such KM5 Opening or Blue Marlin Sundays. Basically, what we're saying here is that if you are driving around the island, there is a very high chance you'll get stopped and breathalyzed. Consequences range from on-the-spot fines through to permanent bans and even criminal action depending on the level of intoxication.

As an aside, beware on roundabouts, generally speaking!

Sex

No big lectures here, life goes on beyond Ibiza. Just think about that when you're about to act without thinking (!).

Balconies

This is so important, it deserves a category of its own. Each year, people are seriously injured or die after falling from or jumping from balconies in hotel and apartment complexes. It's nearly always in an attempt to 'show-off' their talents by jumping into the pool from some height. Sure, sometimes it's late at night or the morning after a heavy session, but increasingly (and unbelievably!) there is a culture of doing this during the day as people chill out around the pool.

Don't be a sheep, have some balls and if you or your mates are doing this or see someone else doing it, ask them to check their head. Totally uncool this.

Crime

To say crime was non-existent in Ibiza would be an overstatement, but it actually isn't that far from the truth. For a tourist resort that has over a million visitors every year, it is so rare to think that there is practically no violent crime whatsoever. Moreover, Ibiza has one of the lowest crime rates for any municipality in Western Europe.

Occasional theft (mainly from accommodation and villas) is nowhere near as big a problem as some would like to make out, again given the million plus visitors, reported incidents make it into the low hundreds each year. In other words, around 1-2 in every 10,000 people are affected and most of those incidents are petty crimes.

Nevertheless, stay on the ball and check here for more info.
