Music inspired by Ibiza's landmarks and legends

... and where to find the artists playing in 2019.

Alluring and mystical, Ibiza has a tendency to inspire artists and creatives from all disciplines. This comes as little wonder since the island features unique architecture and breathtaking natural features.

Creativity and imagination go hand in hand - true of both electronic music producers and visual artists.

Here we recount tracks surely inspired by the island and list where you can catch the DJs playing in 2019. Of course, we include accompanying images, as well as the stories, where there are to be told plus a little speculation, too.

Sven Väth | Cala Llonga | Cocoon Recordings | 2002

Fire was Sven Väth's fifth studio album, following a decade on from his seminal Accident In Paradise LP. Cala Llonga was track seven on the release.

We cannot be certain, but we suspect that this track might be an ode to the idyllic bay of Sol d'en Serra, right around the corner from Cala Llonga. It was here, on the site of the beach club now known as Amante, that Cocoon conducted some of its most debauched and memorable after hours way back in the early days.

Check-out Ricardo Villalobos' remix too if you get the chance.

Sven Väth plays all but one of the remaining Cocoon Monday parties at Amnesia, plus two confirmed daytime events at Ushuaïa (19 July & 13 September).

Albert Vorne | Formentera What (Gareth Emery Remix) | Armada | 2007

We surprised even ourselves by managing to squeeze a trance number onto this list. Gareth Emery has been playing on Ibiza since the days of Armada and the original Cream Ibiza. In 2019, he makes a single appearance.

Set to blow minds, Laserface is the perfect marriage between music and technology, where Gareth's own music is choreographed with dozens of state-of-the-art lasers. Though we're not sure the concept has much connection with Formentera's lazy aura.

Gareth Emery plays his only Ibiza 2019 date at Amnesia on Sunday 8 September for his live A/V Laserface showcase.

A little more recent - and considerably more chilled - you may also be familiar with Edu Imbernon & Los Suruba's ode from last summer.

Catch homegrown duo Los Suruba at several dates at Bora Bora El Patio's new daytime shindig Sunday Cooling.

Miss Kittin | Sunset Strip | Nobody's Bizzness | 2008

Bursting with creativity, (Miss) Kittin is a firecracker of an artist who is often overlooked. The DJ/producer/vocalist has an impressive discography behind her and is not afraid of working outside of the box. Thankfully, she still gets booked on Ibiza multiple times a season.

It's a possibility that she was referring to a sunset strip elsewhere with this electro-edged 2008 production. But we will take this one to mean ours unless evidence emerges to the contrary.

Kittin plays for Music On at Pacha on Thursday 19 September.

Wally Lopez & Sister Bliss feat. Laura White | Dalt Vila | Junkydog Records | 2013

With his bespectacled, cheeky face Wally Lopez is a recognisable personality who has held residencies all over the island. Most recently he had a weekly presence at STK Ibiza.

Equally, Sister Bliss of Faithless-fame needs little introduction. As the name infers, this radio-friendly production is a nod to the stunning ancient citadel that sits proudly in Ibiza old town. If you are yet to explore the hilly streets, make it your priority to do so.

Sister Bliss appears as Faithless (DJ set) at The Masquerade, Pacha on Monday 16 September.

Basement Jaxx | Mermaid of Salinas (Boris Brejcha Remix) | Atlantic Jaxx | 2014

Ses Salinas certainly has its fair share of folklore. Whilst we have seen plenty of eye-boggling sights down on the east stretch of sand, we can't profess to have ever seen a mermaid. Basement Jaxx seems to claim otherwise.

Our favourite version is the Boris Brejcha remix. While Basement Jaxx regularly feature on the island, the masked German brings his unique brand of high-tech minimal to Ibiza for three rare dates this summer. Don't miss them.

Boris Brejcha plays a special one-off at Ushuaïa on Friday 19 July and then two consecutive Wednesdays at Hï in the Theatre 14 and 21 August.

Basement Jaxx have multiple dates at Glitterbox, but also appear for Claptone presents The Masquerade and 30 August at Defected, Eden.

Talamanca System | Balanzat (Tuff City Kids Remix) | International Feel | 2014

Talamanca System is the sporadic three-headed project from Gerd Janson, Lauer and Balearic Beat gatekeeper Mark Barrot. Their output subscribes to the quality-over-quantity school of thought.

The name Balansat - as in San Miguel de Balansat - has its roots in Arabic. The name is a lasting artefact from the 10th-century occupation of the island by the Moor Empire. Perhaps the track is named as a tribute to San Miguel? Or maybe the architects were attempting to court the restaurant Port Balansat?

Gerd Janson is Solomun's +1 guest at Pacha on Sunday 15 September.

The Martinez Brothers & Seth Troxler | Space & Time | Tuskegee | 2014

Maybe this is a bit of a cheat option, seeing as the name of the Ibiza sculpture is Time & Space. But seeing as Seth and those Bronx bros have an Ibiza connection, we're going to use it anyway.

Often referred to as Stonehenge Ibiza, Time & Space is actually a commissioned work that dates back to only 2014 by HEART Ibiza's Guy Laliberté and artist Andrew Rogers. Though it does have pagan connotations.

Given the timing, it's conceivable that this monument did indeed give inspiration to Seth Troxler and The Martinez Brothers for the debut release on their Tuskegee label.

Seth Troxler plays elrow's special one-off The Gardenarium at Cova Santa on Wednesday 31 July.

Stevie & Chris Martinez have several scheduled dates at DC10, including their own Cuttin' Headz mini-residency on 2 August and 6 September.

Kintar | Es Vedra | Sudam Recordings | 2015

Following in the footsteps of some other notable Argentine DJs who have made the island their home, Kintar is the latest countryman in that prestigious lineage. Ethno-vibes stylize both his DJ sets and productions.

A resident at Benirras beach club Elements, you can also catch him spinning his distinct brand of electronic music at Pacha where Elements takes over the Funky Room on Wednesdays. Majestic Es Vedrà rock evokes spiritual powers - we can see why it might resonate with Kintar.

Kintar plays for B!Crazy at HEART Ibiza on Friday 13 September and every Wednesday in Pacha's Funky Room at Flower Power.

HOSH and Pig&Dan | Atlantis Is Not A Fairytale | fryhide | 2017

Stepping away from the Diynamic fold, HOSH has made an instant impression with his own label venture: fryhide. Combining gorgeous synths with emotive strings, we can hear Balearic influence across a lot of its releases.

Taken from the Stories From Sa Talaia EP - need we say anymore. If you missed HOSH's appearance at HEART Ibiza earlier this summer, you still have one more chance.

HOSH plays for Zoo Project at Benimussa Park on Sunday 1 September.

Darius Syrossian | Sunrise at Es Cubells | 8bit | 2018

Darius Syrossian makes no secret of his affinity for the island. The Do Not Sleep resident has a long-standing relationship with Ibiza that shows no signs of cooling down.

Whether he's turning up to play at holidaymaker's villa after party or taking things through to dawn in that basement, it's clear that the island's beauty resonates with him as much as the party scene.

Darius Syrossian returns to Warriors at brand new venue Octan Ibiza on 14 and 21 July.

Do you want two for the price of one? Of course you do. Solomun's little sister Magdalena penned this gorgeous track only last year - with a beautifully shot video to boot!

Magdalena plays her own Shadows party each and every Friday at Cova Santa from 12 July to 13 September. Not only does this invite some pretty heavyweight guests, but is also a rare example of a party with free admission.
